Renewing the digital nomad visa in Spain: deadlines and requirements

Getting the digital nomad visa is just the start: to keep living in Spain you have to renew it on time. Here's when and how to do it so you don't lose your residency.

How often do you renew?

The initial authorization is usually granted for a set period (typically up to 3 years if you entered already with residency, or 1 year if you entered on the consular visa). Later renewals are usually for 2 years, as long as you still meet the requirements.

When to file the renewal

This is the critical point: you can renew from 60 days before your card expires and up to 90 days after. Don't wait until the last day: the sooner you file, the more room you have to fix any document.

Requirements you must keep meeting

• Keep working remotely for your company or clients outside Spain.
• Sufficient income (the minimum required based on the current SMI and number of family members).
• Stay registered and up to date with the tax office and Social Security if applicable.
• Valid health insurance and NIE/TIE in order.
• Not having spent more time outside Spain than allowed.
