NIE and TIE: what they are and how to get them step by step
NIE and TIE are two of the first things you'll need when you arrive in Spain. They're often confused, so let's clear them up.
What is the NIE?
The NIE (Foreigner Identity Number) is your personal ID number in Spain. It's a number, not a card. You need it for almost everything: bank, rental, work or taxes.
What is the TIE?
The TIE (Foreigner Identity Card) is the physical card proving your residence. It's for those staying more than 6 months.
In short: the NIE is the number; the TIE is the residence card that carries that number.
How to get the NIE
- Gather your passport, form EX-15 and proof of the reason.
- Pay the fee (form 790, code 012).
- Book an appointment at the National Police or the consulate.
- Attend with the full file.
How to get the TIE
- Register (empadronamiento) at the town hall.
- Book a fingerprint appointment.
- Bring form EX-17, the fee, photos, passport and the approval.
- Collect the card when ready.
